It’s the Christmas season and so we commence our Christmas season series. Over the next few weeks we will be hearing those beautiful old carols piped around shopping centres and sung at carols services. But pause to think on some of the words:
“Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus our Emmanuel”
There is a lot of theology stacked in those four lines! Or this one:
“True God of true God, Light of light eternal,
Lo, he abhors not the virgin’s womb.
Son of the Father, begotten, not created,..
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing..”
We are singing creeds not lullabies! Best sung on our knees—wonder-struck. They brim with profound theological truth. Today we are going to start by considering this minefield of heresies and treasure chest of truth: ‘the Word became flesh and dwelt among us’.
