The Fear of the Lord

It’s spring time, which often signals the time for some spring cleaning around the home. You know, clearing away the cobwebs that have been gathering, and clearing out the piles of rubbish that have been slowing accumulating over the recent months. We just grow accustomed to it as we walk past and say ‘must clean that up sometime!’ Well, the time has come. Spring time somehow gives us a shot of energy to roll up our sleeves and get those projects done.
Especially over the school holidays. My question is: ‘What about in our spiritual lives?’
Do we need a season designated for a thorough clear out and spruce up? Along that vein, here are some searching questions from a book by Donald Whitney: ‘Ten Questions to Diagnose your Spiritual Health’

  1. Do you thirst for God? “…holy desire, exercised in longings, hungerings, and thirstings after God and holiness, is often mentioned in Scripture as an important part of true religion.” Jonathon Edwards
  2. Are you governed increasingly by God’s Word? “The sum and substance of preparation needed for a coming eternity is that you believe what the Bible tells you and do what the Bible bids you.” Thomas Chalmers
  3. Are you more loving? “The more a person loves, the closer he approaches the image of God.” Martin Luther
  4. Are you more sensitive to God’s presence? “If the soul of a believer is in a healthy condition, he will take occasion to frequently come into God’s presence on purpose to have communion with Him.” A.W. Pink
  5. Do you have a growing concern for the spiritual and temporal needs of others? “There is nothing in which men resemble God more truly than in doing good to others.” John Calvin

Looks like this will need to be continued. Hey, remember, these questions are for sons and daughters ALREADY loved by the Father, not having to earn his love. Just saying…
